Types of Mold

Stachybotrys (Black Mold)

Stachybotrys is most commonly known as “black mold” and has a greenish black gelatinous appearance. Black mold can begin to grow within 24 hours of moisture exposure and needs a continuously moist environment to thrive. Mycotoxins that are produced by black mold cause many negative, health-related symptoms

Chaetomium

Chaetomium is also known as “the other black mold”. It is one of the most common types of mold found in water-damaged homes and likes to feast on paper products such as drywall, wallpaper, books and cardboard. Chaetomium produces high levels of mycotoxins which cause many mold-related health symptoms.

Penicillium

Penicillium encompasses more than 400 species of mold. Some can be used to make cheese or produce antibiotics while others can be harmful and cause health problems or structural damage to buildings. Penicillium is unique because it can grow in relatively low humidity levels which makes it more difficult to detect its water source. It does however have a unique and heavier smell which can alert you of its presence in your home.

Aspergillus

Aspergillus consists of a few hundred opportunistic mold species. It is primarily found on dust, powdery food items, building materials and soil. It typically insights allergy-type symptoms in humans but can also induce high fever and asthma attacks.

Our Air Quality Testing Process

Elite Moisture Solutions has indoor air quality testing down to a science. The steps outlined below are integral to developing a customized treatment plan that will remedy any unhealthy air in your home or business. Once your treatment plan has been executed, the team will take a second sample. The pre-treatment and post treatment results will be compared to confirm that the remediation was a success.

Gather Air Samples

An Elite Moisture Solution certified technician will take a minimum of two air samples: one inside and one outside your home or business (more may be needed depending on the size of your space). These samples will be collected using a machine that filters air through a spore trap, called a Micro-5, that collects mold spores, pollen’s, and fibers. The technician may also take samples using a swab or lift tape method.

Perform Labratory Anaysis

The samples taken will be sent to a third-party laboratory for analysis.

Results and Recommended Solutions

The laboratory will give us a detailed report of what type molds were found and the total spore count for each. The Elite Moisture Solutions team will work with you to determine what course of treatment is required, if any.
