If you’re a homeowner in North Carolina, you know the importance of protecting your house from moisture. From mold growth to structural damage, moisture can cause serious problems. That’s where Elite Moisture Solutions comes in with our vapor barrier installation services. By placing a barrier between your home and the ground, we can prevent moisture from seeping in and causing issues. Our trained professionals use the highest quality materials to ensure that your home is protected for years to come.
A vapor barrier is a polyethylene sheet that is installed as a floor covering in your crawlspace. The primary function of a vapor barrier is to prevent elevated moisture levels in your crawlspace and home. Crawlspaces typically have a dirt floor; the moisture in the dirt floor will evaporate and seep into the air and systems under your house. The elevated moisture increases the risk of things like mold, rust, wood rot and air quality which could compromise the structural integrity of your home and your health.
As of 2009, North Carolina building code requires total vapor barrier coverage in all new homes which emphasizes their importance.
While a vapor barrier reduces problems caused by elevated moisture levels, it does not eliminate them. A crawlspace encapsulation system is the best way to remove all risk related to crawlspace moisture issues. A vapor barrier is one step toward sealing your crawlspace.
Water can seep into your home through the soil in your crawlspace’s dirt floor. The presence of this water increase the moisture and humidity levels in the air and in the structures in the crawlspace. Vapor barriers help to keep the crawlspace dry by preventing moisture from coming up through the floor.
Mold grows best in dark and damp environments which means a crawlspace is a prime location for mold to develop and thrive. Reducing moisture levels by installing a vapor barrier decreases the risk of mold growth and damage.
Moisture can corrode metals, rot wood, and deteriorate insulation. A vapor barrier helps to control and reduce the moisture level in the crawlspace which protects the major (plumbing, HVAC, electrical, etc.) systems that are found there.
Moisture in the crawlspace can lead to wood rot and deterioration which compromises the structural integrity of your home and ultimately results in a very hefty repair bill. Vapor barriers help to keep water and moisture out and keeps your home structurally sound.
Vapor barrier installation is comprised of a simple three step process that includes: clearing the crawlspace, installing the polyethylene liner and taping the seams of the liner. A vapor barrier that is installed incorrectly can be as bad as not having a vapor barrier at all.
The technicians will begin by removing all the debris from the crawlspace which includes anything that is not attached to the home.
The Elite Moisture Solutions team will install a reinforced 9-mil, 15-mil or 36-mil polyethylene liner that will cover the entire crawlspace floor.
Once the liner has been installed the technicians will tape all the seams which will act as a seal between the various pieces of liner and will ensure total coverage.
